A carport doesn’t have to be purely functional — with the right design choices, it can genuinely add to the look of your home. Here are some of the directions worth considering before you finalise your design.
Flat Roof for a Modern Look
Flat-roof carports have become popular for their clean, minimal lines, and they pair well with contemporary home designs. They’re also generally more straightforward to build, which can keep costs down.
Pitched Roof for a Traditional Feel
If your home has a more traditional roofline, a pitched carport roof can echo that style and blend in more naturally than a flat design.
Choosing a Material That Matches Your Home
Steel in a chromadek colour finish can be matched closely to roof sheeting or trim elsewhere on your property. Aluminium offers a lighter, more contemporary profile with a wide range of powder-coated colours. Timber brings warmth and works particularly well with garden-facing carports.
Open-Sided vs Enclosed Designs
Fully open-sided carports maximise airflow and light, while partially enclosed designs offer more protection from driving rain and wind — a real consideration in exposed Cape Town locations, particularly along the Atlantic Seaboard.
Roof Sheeting Options
IBR and Zincalume sheeting give full weatherproofing and are the standard choice for most builds. Mixing in a run of clear or tinted polycarbonate sheets lets natural light through while still keeping the structure watertight — a popular option for carports positioned close to a window or living area, where a fully solid roof would otherwise darken the space.
Gutters and Finishing Details
Adding a gutter directs rainwater away from the structure rather than letting it run off the edge onto paving or a doorway below, and it’s a small addition that makes a noticeable difference to how finished the structure looks and functions day to day.
